Soft ice cream in the dipping cabinet, frost creeping across the back wall of a reach-in, a puddle under a display freezer after every defrost — a commercial freezer usually gives warning before it fails. Best Pro repairs reach-in, undercounter and worktop freezers, chest freezers, ice cream cabinets and glass-door display freezers for restaurants, ice cream shops, convenience stores and markets across Colorado Springs and in Monument, with same-day service for most calls.
Where freezers go wrong
- Defrost. Every door opening leaves frost on the evaporator. When a defrost heater, the timer or control board, or the termination sensor fails, the coil ices over and the cabinet warms from the top shelf down.
- Door gaskets and hinges. A torn or flattened gasket lets room air in, and in a freezer that air turns straight into frost around the door and on the coil. Close the door on a dollar bill: if it slides out with no drag, that part of the gasket isn’t sealing.
- Drains. Defrost water that can’t get out refreezes in the drain pan or ends up on the floor.
- Fans. A dead evaporator fan leaves the coil frosted and the cabinet warm; a dead condenser fan overheats the compressor.
- The condenser coil. Undercounter and worktop units breathe at floor level, right where flour, grease and dust collect. A clogged coil makes the compressor run nonstop until it trips.
Glass doors and display freezers
Colorado air is dry, so a glass door that fogs up or drips usually means something has failed: the heater in the glass or the frame, a gasket, or a door that no longer closes all the way. Display freezers in convenience stores along I-25 and Powers Boulevard see door traffic all day, and their hinges, closers and gaskets often wear out long before the refrigeration does.
Ice cream cabinets
A dipping cabinet that runs a few degrees warm shows up right away as soft, icy product, and summer heat near a sunny front window makes it work harder. We check the controller, the condenser and the lid or door seals before suspecting the compressor.
