Best Pro repairs over-the-range and built-in microwaves in homes across Colorado Springs and the surrounding area. These are usually worth fixing: replacing one means new mounting, venting and finding a unit that fits the opening. A small countertop microwave often costs less to replace than to repair, and the technician will tell you if that’s the case.
Why a microwave stops working
- Runs, turntable turns, but food stays cold. A fault in the high-voltage circuit: the magnetron, the high-voltage diode, the capacitor or the transformer. A tripped thermal cutout can do the same.
- Won’t start, or went dead with a pop. A microwave has three or four door interlock switches. When one fails, the microwave won’t run or it blows the main fuse — and a new fuse will blow again until the switch is replaced.
- Sparking inside. Usually grease burned into the waveguide cover (the small panel on the cavity wall), chipped paint on the cavity, or metal in the dish.
- Turntable not turning. A failed turntable motor or a worn coupler.
- Buttons don’t respond. A worn membrane keypad or a failed control board.
- Over-the-range vent fan or light out. A fan motor, a light socket or a switch. While we’re there we check the grease filters, and the charcoal filter if the microwave recirculates air instead of venting outside.
Don’t open it yourself
A microwave’s high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even after the unit is unplugged. Testing the magnetron, diode and capacitor is a job for a technician with the right tools.
