Wine keeps best at a steady temperature, so a cooler that drifts a few degrees or hums louder than it used to is worth checking early. Best Pro repairs built-in and freestanding wine coolers and beverage centers, single and dual zone, in homes across Colorado Springs and the surrounding area.
Compressor or thermoelectric?
The first thing the technician checks is how your cooler is cooled, because the two kinds fail differently.
- Compressor coolers work like a small refrigerator. When they run warm, the cause is usually a dirty condenser, a failed condenser or evaporator fan, a start relay, a temperature sensor or the control board — less often a refrigerant leak or a worn compressor.
- Thermoelectric coolers have no compressor; a solid-state module and two small fans move the heat out. They’re quiet but can only cool so far below room temperature, so in a warm room or a garage they may never reach the setting. A failed fan or module is the usual repair.
Common problems
- One zone warm in a dual-zone cooler. Each zone has its own sensor and often its own fan; one failed fan or sensor leaves one side warm while the other is fine.
- Too cold or freezing bottles. A temperature sensor reading wrong or a relay stuck closed on the control board.
- Ice on the back wall or water inside. A blocked drain or a door that isn’t sealing lets humid air in, which turns into frost and then water.
- Running hot under the counter. Built-in coolers breathe through the front grille. A freestanding model installed under a counter has nowhere to vent and overheats — we see this often after kitchen remodels.
- Noise or vibration. A worn fan motor, a loose compressor mount or a cabinet that isn’t level. Vibration also disturbs the wine, so it’s worth fixing.
