When the house won’t cool down on a hot Colorado Springs afternoon, the cause is usually one of a few parts in the outdoor unit, the indoor coil or the thermostat. Best Pro repairs central air conditioners in homes across Colorado Springs and the surrounding area.
Before you call
- Check that the thermostat is set to Cool and below room temperature, and replace its batteries if it has them.
- Check the breaker for the outdoor unit and the furnace, and the disconnect switch next to the outdoor unit.
- Look at the air filter. A clogged filter is one of the most common reasons an AC stops cooling.
Common AC problems
- Outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn’t spin, or nothing runs. A failed capacitor is the most common summer repair — heat wears them out. A burned contactor or a condenser fan motor are next on the list.
- Runs but blows warm air. A dirty condenser coil or low refrigerant from a leak. In late spring, cottonwood fluff mats onto outdoor coils along the Front Range and can choke the airflow in a few weeks.
- Ice on the lines or the indoor coil. Not enough air across the coil — a dirty filter, a weak blower — or low refrigerant. Turn the AC off and run the fan to thaw it, then call us; running it frozen can damage the compressor.
- Water around the furnace. A clogged condensate drain line or a failed condensate pump. Some systems have a float switch that shuts the AC off when the drain backs up.
- Turns on and off every few minutes. A dirty coil, low refrigerant, an oversized system or a thermostat in the wrong spot.
What we do
We check the electrical parts, the refrigerant pressures, both coils, the blower and the drain, and give you the price before starting the repair. HVAC service call and repair prices are on our prices page. We also install smart thermostats — Nest, Ecobee and Honeywell.
The AC shares its blower and air handler with your furnace, so if the heat isn’t working either, see furnace repair.
