Most gas fireplace problems come down to the pilot assembly and the small parts that prove the flame is there. Best Pro repairs gas fireplaces and inserts in homes across Colorado Springs and the surrounding area, and also works on wood-burning and electric fireplaces.
Gas fireplace problems and their causes
- Pilot won’t light. No gas to the fireplace (check that the shutoff valve is open), a clogged pilot orifice or a failed spark igniter.
- Pilot lights, but goes out when you let go of the knob. The thermocouple isn’t producing enough voltage to hold the gas valve open — it’s dirty, worn or not sitting in the pilot flame.
- Pilot stays on, but the burner won’t come on. Check the remote or receiver batteries first. If they’re fine, the cause is usually a weak thermopile, the wall switch or its wiring, or the gas valve.
- Burner lights, then shuts off. A weak thermopile, a pilot flame that no longer reaches it, or a safety switch that detected a venting problem.
- Fireplaces with electronic ignition have no standing pilot; a control module and a battery backup light the burner. When nothing happens, we start with the module, the batteries and the flame sensor.
- Blower fan noisy or not running. A worn fan motor, a failed thermostat switch or a speed control.
- Soot or a white film on the glass. Soot means the flame isn’t burning cleanly and needs adjusting; a white film is normal combustion residue that needs a proper glass cleaner.
Gas fireplace safety
A gas fireplace burns natural gas or propane inside your living room, so safety comes before comfort:
- If you smell gas, don’t switch the fireplace, lights or any appliances on or off. Leave the house and call your gas company or 911 from outside.
- Keep carbon monoxide detectors working near bedrooms and on every floor of the home, and test them regularly.
- Stop using the fireplace and call a technician if the glass is cracked, the flames are tall, yellow and sooty instead of mostly blue, soot builds up on the glass or walls, or the pilot light keeps going out.
During a gas fireplace repair our technician checks the gas connections for leaks, the pilot assembly and thermocouple or thermopile, the venting and the glass seal, and tests the fireplace before leaving.
Electric fireplaces
Electric fireplaces have a heater, a fan and a flame-effect light or motor. When the flames show but there’s no heat, it’s usually the heating element, the fan or a tripped thermal cutout; when the flame effect stops moving, it’s the motor or the light.
