Our technicians fix over-the-range and built-in microwaves in kitchens all over Colorado Springs, in Monument and around Fort Carson.
Worth fixing?
Usually, if it’s built in. An over-the-range or built-in unit is sized to its opening and wired in place, and over-the-range models are also vented through the cabinet or the wall, so a replacement has to match all of that. A countertop microwave is another story: a repair often costs more than a new one, and the technician will say so before you pay for anything.
What the symptoms mean
- The light is on and the plate turns, but the food stays cold. The part that makes the microwaves isn’t getting power or has burned out: the magnetron, the high-voltage diode, the capacitor or the transformer. A tripped thermal cutout looks the same.
- It won’t start, or it died with a bang. Three or four interlock switches tell the microwave the door is shut. When one fails, the oven either refuses to start or takes out its main fuse — and replacing just the fuse doesn’t last; it blows again until the bad switch is changed.
- Sparks inside. Most often food and grease baked onto the waveguide cover, the small mica or plastic panel inside the cavity, or chipped paint on the cavity walls. Metal trim on a plate does it too.
- The plate doesn’t turn. The turntable motor or the coupler under the plate.
- On an over-the-range model, the vent fan or the light quit. A fan motor, a socket or a switch. We also look at the grease filters and, on a model that blows the air back into the kitchen instead of outside, the charcoal filter.
Dead after a storm
Summer afternoons in Colorado Springs bring a lot of lightning. After a surge, a microwave can sit there with a dark display or a keypad that does nothing. Sometimes only a fuse has blown; sometimes the control board is damaged. We test before replacing the board. Whole-house surge protection, installed by an electrician, protects the rest of your appliances too.
Not a DIY repair
The capacitor inside a microwave stores a lethal voltage and can stay charged after the plug is pulled. Leave the testing to someone trained to discharge it safely.
